We have been for a week for the past 5 years and here is a summary of our experiences. Without a doubt November and December are low season and the best deals occur 5-10 days before a trip. Sometimes they appear and disappear and reappear..often with a price drop.
Tripcentral is a good website to find what you want...and then probably check it out on redtag as it is usually a little less there.
2013 Royal Decameron:
older but well maintained, food - lots of fresh fruits and salads and nice outdoor eating. The a la carte are not great. No international drinks. Noise or some radio music at every bar - not too bad but would have been nicer if Mexican music or none. Most nights the shows were spectacular - well choreographed, athletic, fast paced, colorful costumes. We did not go on the 2 game show nights. Great location - can walk the beach forever, get massages on the beach (Mimi and Natalie, both middle aged ladies, in the first massage tent towards Rui were particularly good), can walk into Bucarias on the beach or on the cobble stoned road, kayaking in the bay at 10 in the morning all the way to see dolphins and sometimes whales a little further out, great sunsets, warm water this time? Check-in rather tedious and paper driven, charge for safety deposit boxes, no shampoo...the little things that are not really important but a little bothersome in the first few minutes... and lining up to book a la carte.
2012 Bahia Principe Sian Ka'an
Definitely 5 star, excellent buffets - the extras and always fresh fresh baked goods, sushi, etc. International drinks and a small group of musicians nightly in the bar here.
Had to catch a small train bus to the beach and restaurants. A la carte mostly excellent though we did not enjoy the fish restaurant and enjoyed the French quite a lot. Once at each is enough. We preferred the buffet at the Sian Kaan so often went back there on the train for lunch - though some days it was not important enough to do so. Not to say that the others weren't good just that the Sian was even better. Easy to book the a la carte.
The shows were again colorful, musical and fun and 2 every night at 2 venues so a little train between the properties. Always entertainment that was pleasant. Warm clear lovely water on the Caribbean side. Can snorkel a little.
2011 Palladium Puerto Vallarta side
Lots of hills, quite isolated. Can walk a short distance on the beach and quite pretty with some rocky areas. Surf boards and lessons on the little surf but again rocks to be careful of.
Food fair...not great though outside again and a la carte nice service but not very good food...really the food is a downer here but international drinks.
Some musical entertainment ok. lovely sunsets.
2010 Iberostar Lindo
A very large property and little trains if you needed them. Enjoyed trying each a la carte restaurant - 5 different ones with the French being the best. Shows entertaining but only so so...something to do. The Lindo gives access to more restaurants and the lounge area and pleasant before dinner music.
Again the Cancun side ... a ride into Playa del Carmen if you want 20 minutes or less?
