We have been for a week for the past 5 years and here is a summary of our experiences. Without a doubt November and December are low season and the best deals occur 5-10 days before a trip. Sometimes they appear and disappear and reappear..often with a price drop.
Tripcentral is a good website to find what you want...and then probably check it out on redtag as it is usually a little less there.
2013 Royal Decameron:
older but well maintained, food - lots of fresh fruits and salads and nice outdoor eating. The a la carte are not great. No international drinks. Noise or some radio music at every bar - not too bad but would have been nicer if Mexican music or none. Most nights the shows were spectacular - well choreographed, athletic, fast paced, colorful costumes. We did not go on the 2 game show nights. Great location - can walk the beach forever, get massages on the beach (Mimi and Natalie, both middle aged ladies, in the first massage tent towards Rui were particularly good), can walk into Bucarias on the beach or on the cobble stoned road, kayaking in the bay at 10 in the morning all the way to see dolphins and sometimes whales a little further out, great sunsets, warm water this time? Check-in rather tedious and paper driven, charge for safety deposit boxes, no shampoo...the little things that are not really important but a little bothersome in the first few minutes... and lining up to book a la carte.
2012 Bahia Principe Sian Ka'an
Definitely 5 star, excellent buffets - the extras and always fresh fresh baked goods, sushi, etc. International drinks and a small group of musicians nightly in the bar here.
Had to catch a small train bus to the beach and restaurants. A la carte mostly excellent though we did not enjoy the fish restaurant and enjoyed the French quite a lot. Once at each is enough. We preferred the buffet at the Sian Kaan so often went back there on the train for lunch - though some days it was not important enough to do so. Not to say that the others weren't good just that the Sian was even better. Easy to book the a la carte.
The shows were again colorful, musical and fun and 2 every night at 2 venues so a little train between the properties. Always entertainment that was pleasant. Warm clear lovely water on the Caribbean side. Can snorkel a little.
2011 Palladium Puerto Vallarta side
Lots of hills, quite isolated. Can walk a short distance on the beach and quite pretty with some rocky areas. Surf boards and lessons on the little surf but again rocks to be careful of.
Food fair...not great though outside again and a la carte nice service but not very good food...really the food is a downer here but international drinks.
Some musical entertainment ok. lovely sunsets.
2010 Iberostar Lindo
A very large property and little trains if you needed them. Enjoyed trying each a la carte restaurant - 5 different ones with the French being the best. Shows entertaining but only so so...something to do. The Lindo gives access to more restaurants and the lounge area and pleasant before dinner music.
Again the Cancun side ... a ride into Playa del Carmen if you want 20 minutes or less?

Kids
Nov. 23, 2013
So many times I have been going to write little comments or interesting things that the kids do or learn and I never quite get around to it...and then the thoughts and memories disappear...only for new ones to appear.
I must say it has been a pleasure and an opportunity that we are grateful for, to have the grandchildren living so closely. Clive and I both enjoy and are fascinated by these two little beings. They live in their world of 'now' and if you are with them, you can see how absorbed they are in the present moment. They are so loving and aware only of themselves and the world around them...not planning for the future and thinking about the past. Sometimes T. doesn't want you but that has nothing to do with you but rather what is going on in her head. At least that is the way that it appears. So much energy can be expended crying, screaming or getting attention if their perceived need or want is not met at this moment...and then forgotten about entirely and back on stream in minutes.
I love my time with the kids and so does Clive. He is an amazing playmate and caregiver with the two of them. We are able to watch them grow and learn and get to know us.
Last week when Mave and Wally and gang came for lunch we had two little girls that were able to enjoy it too. T. tried the line "Are you kidding me?" and we all laughed so as she was getting her boots on we heard the line twice more. We laughed on queue and she enjoyed our response....is this learning action and reaction.
A month back T I read the long version of Monkeys Jumping on the Bed and then read it again. Then T. read it to me. Isn't repetition wonderful? She could tell me the story! I was surprised and delighted. Some weeks T. wants to put her down for her nap when we babysit and we read and sometimes she wants a backrub. Last week it was a shoulder rub in the family room! Nap time is becoming so independent ...now I don't nap with her, now no more stories, no back rub and last week she took herself to her room and closed the door for her nap. So some days the naps are easier for her. A year ago they were very challenging for her to settle.
K on the other hand, likes her bed and often plays with her musical mobile on her own before she alerts you that she is awake. She is usually sitting with a smile when you go to pick her up...and at just over a year is developing a sense of herself and what she wants and tries to communicate. That little one is the food moocher...always looking for something to eat.. preferably bread or biscuits and she has to settle for the nutritious fruit, etc sometimes. She has a definite nose for the sweet stuff...no sneaking anything when she is around.
I smiled at T's third birthday when there were lots of people milling and attention everywhere. K. spent quite a long time with a big paper shopping bag over her shoulder pushing the stroller around the main floor of the house ...back and forth and back and forth...oblivious to all the people.
T. I had a blast with her at the wave pool last week...just the two of us. From a little hesitant to exuberant enthusiasm she summoned the courage (with a little encouragement) to master all four of the slides! and jump in the waves. After 2 hours I could hardly get her out. We took off the life jacket and she went to play some more. Eventually we got to the change room. She whispered I love you, I love you when I had her standing on the bench and wrapped in a towel. And then back to getting dressed and leaving...as though that moment had never happened. So precious! And she was so enthusiastic.
T is loving tobogganing this year too. The first time this year with us..she went down on her own and then I was allowed every second run down with her. So I got to walk down the incline and pull the toboggan up and she loves going up and down. She likes to go out tobogganing this year and the clothes don't seem as cumbersome.
We learn so much about human beings, reactions and how we operate. We also learn to be there with them trying to see the world through their eyes...or at least smiling at what they do and understand. May we continue to have these opportunities as the girls learn and develop into their own beings.
much love

Assiniboine via Sunshine 2012
Can't believe that I did not do an entry last year as I (we) were all so pumped by our (Georgina, Trish and I) by our 5 day hike into Assiniboine and out via Sunshine.
- 5 days of glorious weather
- 2 days in from Sunshine, 2 days out the same way and one day at Assiniboine
- again that relaxation and enjoyment of continuous days out in nature at altitude
- fabulous flowers and meadows, blue skies, even swimming in the lake at Assiniboine
- Trish doing the trip from the bucket list that you don't expect to get to...she used that cat-urine soaked backpack of the 70's (and she had another one at home) and she was definitely challenged and concerned about the big long hike up the pass on the way out. We all did well just each doing as her own speed and into that zone for much of the day.
- the euphoria of enjoying every moment out in nature with friends and knowing that you can enjoy so much with your shelter, food and clothing all in one bag.

Molar, Clearwater, Dolomite Passes incl. Devon Lakes August 6-13, 2013
Wow, wow, wow....it affected me so much....a wonderful spectacular trip in every way...from regular days backpacking and fun with a great group to ending up being so high and at peace with the routine of living in the mountains...it brought tears to my eyes numerous times in the few days after it all.
There are many great days and things that I have experienced but this was really exceptional and one of those rare opportunities. I am so grateful for the opportunity that I had. Thanks so much for George wanting to include me from the beginning with all the vanFraassens (7 of them to start with...Adrian for the first night and then Kate (the initial idea), Georgina (what 17 or 18 years of annual trips), Louise (George's sister and just my speed with a great philosophy), her 2 kids Syd and Richard (both educated and living out of a car!) and the first trip with Jamie since 2007.
It was close to 70 km the route and spectacular being in the high country as always. Some firsts:
- a 12 hour day followed by a 10 hour day (21 km each of those last 2 days)
- the distances 16,12, 0 for me, 21 and 21km
- river crossings with a real technique
- new boots so heels that required 2-3weeks before I could wear much of a shoes again so pain each time I put the boots on... so glad that it did not hurt to walk
- a day in camp alone to air my feet and hope for some healing...it did allow me to finish the hike in my boots... a new experience that I quite enjoyed being on my own and watching the scenery, etc.
- a large group with lots of youth so I felt challenged and yet I finished yearning to make a plan for next year
- sharing the weight of food and stuff and sharing the tasks so Richard did most of the cooking
- random camping so awesome and so next to no people
- camped on a flood plain!
- crossed numerous streams and had a hand out to help me jump further numerous times
- actually fording a river twice with the proper technique
- walking through bog, alder bushes, big black flies that bite, so much open meadow, beautiful lakes, the most wondrous approach to Dolomite Pass as one goes up for about 10km with rising and then meadows 3 times over. So much rock on this pass, I loved it and see why it was Gramps favorite. I would like to camp just beyond Katherine another time...and then Bob tells me that Gramps planted grass up here and had his campsite with his first homemade nylon tent without a floor. George and I agreed that Dolomite Pass has to be one of the most spectacular passes that we have ever been to and of course we were well into the mode by the time that we arrived here. So many wonderful places to pitch a tent here and enjoy the rocks, streams, waterfall and lakes. The walk from the top of Helen Lake was just the end and a bit of a slog with lots of daytrippers here. It will probably never be my favorite hike again after this experience. It seemed like a lot of downhill and often rather boring after so many days up so high. Every time I know why I do multi-day trips rather than single days.
- a group where every individual had a positive attitude and made the group so wonderful ...and lots of youth to stretch my abilities

New Orleans, Transatlantic cruise, Amalfi, Sicily, Bristol Apr. 3-May 12, 2013
Settled into our hotel just off St. Charles Ave. The streetcar worked great getting into the centre. Ate at a couple of recommended restaurants and wandered about - food is worth seeking out in this town. Much busier than last time which was just before Christmas. Lots of music in the pubs, lots of color in the streets and entertainment about. Even managed a late night burlesque type show at a upscale hotel. Walked tons. Rode the streetcar a long way. Saw a wonderful wedding in the square with angel wings on the bride and lots of what I think of as mardi gras colors. Enjoyed this city a lot...food and music.
After 3 days jumped on the Navigator of the Seas, a Royal Caribbean cruise line. With 3000+ passengars we found lots of entertainment....always 3 venues to casually listen to music. Our favorite was the pub with the great folk singer...what a repertoire to go on for so many nights. Also enjoyed several other groups. The food was very very good...desserts not as good as last time but enjoyed. Could only manage 2 dining rooms meals a day! As usual yoga and sauna every day and I loved the climbing wall ...inline skating and did try the ice rink. Our table mates had pretty racist opinions and were life time cruisers out of New Orleans. A couple and father that felt rather entitled to A+ individual service however for the most part we enjoyed them and they enjoyed their free booze. We enjoyed the next table over and joined them for a couple of nights... a retiring very successful pastor, a business woman former home ec. teacher (their friends), an Aussie couple with a place in rural France. Interesting...would have loved more time with them. Definitely want to repeat this experience. Nine days without a port - I love it.

Pisa (Livorno) was a great day out - though lots of rain, the Azores walked and walked and ok.
Pisa (Livorno) was a great day out - though lots of rain, the Azores walked and walked and ok.
From Citavecchia to Rome for 2 nights. One day of brilliant sunshine and one day of rain. Rome is always exciting.
Then the train to Naples and all of its true color. A fabulous restaurant at noon Trattoria Mangia e Bevi with no English menu....so authentic, so yummy, so cheap! An interesting old quarter to wander in.
Then on to Sorrento, a great place to holiday in and a good place for day trips. Lucked out with agricultural food festival in the evening (not so good) but the entertainment was great.
Loved the bus rides down the Amalfi coast (would never drive) looking over the edge. The train to Sicily was also very comfortable.
Amalfi is a beautiful coastal area with lots of tourism.
Sicily had every day with sunshine. I would not rent a car here either - too difficult and expensive to park and they are all dinged up. If it doesn't have a ding, then it is out of place. Taormina was a lovely and small tourist town. Mt. Etna was a good walk - we used public transport but really it did not require all day and there is only one bus each day. I enjoyed my walk on the volcano and Clive was recovering from a cold. Syracuse has had lots of money spent there and we found an excellent Michelin restaurant (too bad Clive couldn't eat). A nice wander. Catania was kind of ugly and we walked quite a bit here. Agrigento is place way up on a hill and we walked up and up nearly to the town of the town on various streets. Saw the ruins and had a good time here.
Palermo is a place to visit many sites but by now we were kind of site-tired so we enjoyed the architecture and wandering about. So glad to have the opportunity to see Rigoletto from the top layer of the big old mangnificent opera house.
(English subtitles would have helped)...but what an experience...and staying just down the road. Then a bus to the beach the next day and pizza and beer in the sunshine before our flight to England the next day.
Well, we are now on the Amalfi Coast and also have a computer connection! Everything has worked out so well. Today we took the bus to
The cruise was awesome... we enjoyed every
minute of our time there....will definitely do that again.
We
are glad that
Another day of rain ... The third since leaving home. Good that I have
clothes for all weathers. Long underwear helps and so does a hood and
rain jacket
Yesterday we travelled 15 miles in 90 minutes on the Amalfi coast and my pizza had 19 olives of which Clive managed 2!

Rome
was even better than
We enjoyed Sicily but found it quite poor.
Summing up, we enjoyed the cappucinos, gelatos, pizzas, croissants, wine and so on in Italy. We found that the ingredients in most places were the same so the menus seemed to resemble one another quite a bit. I was expecting a little more variety. We did not find the Italians to be as friendly as we had expected - unless they were in the tourist industry. In fact, a few of the bus drivers were most unhelpful...and that made Catania quite difficult to navigate (as the buses were hard to figure out with no Italian and difficulty sorting it out - harder than China even!)..so we walked further than we wished. However, at a small train station, we loved it because it was so important that we enjoy our coffee (and water and candy) and get on the next right train. So we found ups and downs but I think that we came home thinking this was good but not as good as most other places that we have been. We had some wonderful experiences and some ok ones....a few days of rain really is not welcome when on holiday...you make the best of it but really it is better in the sunshine. My planning was superb and it made everything roll smootly - ideas for activities every day and hotels all prebooked saved heaps of time daily. An extra day in Taormina would have been nice but otherwise perfect. Too bad we were not interested in all the sights of Palermo but we enjoyed our choices immensely (the beach and the opera).
Sorrento was a
tourists dream and
An interesting day and an interesting dinner!
We
caught the bus up to Mt. Etna today and walked on the volcano. It even
spewed on the weekend! and lots of grit and volcanic rock still lying round in
the parking lot edges. It was probably about 20 cm deep but most of it
was cleaned up. All of the cars have a dust on them and the roofs of the
building have lava bits between all of the ceramic shingles. It was
interesting and comfortable though not as dramatic as other volcanoes that we
have seen...and Clive rested most of the day with a cold. This island
seems to have figures out how to get lots of tourists ...many from the ships
to the sights quickly and in short order. I saw at least 3 different
cruise ship groups. I wandered quite a way up the volcano - away from
the masses. In parts it was like walking up a hill of sand. Found
some snow underneath the volcanic debris. Pretty relaxing and a
bit of a workout.
Figuring
out the buses in Catania is a real challenge...and we have figured them out
all over the world. Not that far to go but the numbers and maps dont
jive very well and these Italians are for the most part quite surly...unless
they work in the tourist trade. Anyways we did make it to a restaurant
recommended in Lonely Planet. It did mention that you would have to be
patient for mamas cooking. We learned...sort of ...before we left.
We arrived about 7.20 pm and were the first customers as 7.30 appears to be
opening time. We finally got served about 8:30. Meantime the
restaurant had 12 other couples with wine, water, or beer and bread waiting
for food to arrive. The waiter arrived late for work so the jack of all
trades - taking orders, receiving groceries and probably cooking took our
order. Mama screamed in the kitchen a few times during our time
there. The waiter (that arrived late) was helping in the kitchen when I
tried to pay the bill then it took him a couple of minutes fumbling to find
our change. It would have made a good Faulty Towers episode. Oh,
to have stayed all evening and watched the people wait for their food.
Ours took an hour and we were there first!!! I think that they need to
hire some kitchen staff...or guests that may be happy with bread and
liquid.
How
was the food? Fine but not wonderful though the place was cute.
Vegetarian carbonara and sardines stuffed with pine nuts, raisins and cheese
and breadcrumbs and a tomato salad with a little basil.
